How the price is calculated
Gold and silver are traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce, which weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams (heavier than the 28.35 g ounce used for food). Every figure on this page starts from that live spot price and is converted with simple arithmetic:
- Per gram = spot per ounce ÷ 31.1035
- Per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (about 32.15 troy ounces)
- Per tola = per gram × 11.6638 (one tola is 3/8 of a troy ounce)
- Karat gold = pure-gold price × karat ÷ 24, so 22K is 91.67% gold, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%
- Other currencies = US-dollar value × the latest daily exchange rate
What sets the gold price
There is no single official gold price. The number quoted worldwide is the over-the-counter spot price, formed by banks and dealers trading large bars in London, Zurich, New York and Asian centres, and closely tied to COMEX gold futures. The main drivers are real interest rates, the US dollar, central-bank buying and investor flows; our gold forecast page explains each one, and the gold trading guide covers the markets in depth.
Retail prices in each country sit above spot because of fabrication costs, dealer margins and local taxes, and they move with the local currency as well as with gold itself. Frequently asked questions
Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?
No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
Why is the troy ounce used instead of a normal ounce?
Precious metals have been weighed in troy units for centuries. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the avoirdupois ounce of 28.35 grams used for everyday goods, so always check which ounce a price refers to.
How often does the price on this page update?
Our server collects the spot price about every 15 minutes, and the page refreshes it again in your browser while you read. Exchange rates are updated daily. Spot trading pauses from Friday evening to Sunday evening (New York time), so at weekends you see the last traded price.
