Gold in Singapore: local context

Singapore has built itself into one of Asia's main precious-metals hubs, with bank vaults, refiners and bullion dealers serving investors from across the region. Jewellery shops in the city typically display a daily price per gram for 916 (22K) gold, the purity favoured for traditional Chinese and Indian wedding jewellery, while bullion dealers quote bars and coins against the international price per troy ounce.

A key local rule is the Investment Precious Metals (IPM) exemption: since 1 October 2012, qualifying investment-grade gold (at least 99.5% pure), silver (99.9%) and platinum (99%) bars, ingots and coins are exempt from Goods and Services Tax. Jewellery and lower-purity items are not, so GST is added on top of the metal price, design and making charges. Check the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore (IRAS) for the current rules before you buy.

Unlike most central banks, the Monetary Authority of Singapore manages the Singapore dollar against an undisclosed basket of trading-partner currencies rather than setting an interest rate. That framework has tended to keep the SGD steadier than many regional currencies, so gold in SGD usually follows the US-dollar gold price closely, with the USD/SGD rate adding a smaller second layer of movement.

How this price is calculated

Live: spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce × 1.2776 SGD per USD ÷ 31.1035 = S$167.26 per gram of pure gold. Each purity multiplies this by its gold content (for example 22K = 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67%), and each unit multiplies by its weight in grams. Figures are the value of the gold content only; local retail, jewellery and buy-back prices differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is there GST on gold in Singapore?

Investment precious metals that meet the purity thresholds (gold of at least 99.5%) are exempt from GST under the IPM rules introduced in October 2012. Gold jewellery is subject to GST at the standard rate.

What is 916 gold?

916 gold contains 91.6% pure gold, which is 22 karat. It is the standard purity for much of the gold jewellery sold in Singapore and Malaysia.

Why is the shop price higher than the price on this page?

This page shows the spot value of the gold content only. Retail prices add workmanship (making) charges, the dealer's margin and, for jewellery, GST.

Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?

No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
