Key drivers to watch

  • Real interest rates and the Fed. Gold pays no yield, so higher inflation-adjusted bond yields raise the cost of holding it. The Federal Reserve raised rates in September 2026, and Goldman Sachs, UBS and the Reuters poll all cite high yields as the main near-term headwind.
  • The US dollar. A stronger dollar makes gold dearer for non-US buyers; UBS (20 Oct 2026) and the Reuters poll (27 Oct 2026) both point to dollar strength weighing on gold this autumn.
  • Central-bank buying. Official-sector purchases have been the main structural support. Goldman Sachs estimated buying at around 90 tonnes a month versus a pre-2022 average of 17 tonnes (reported September 2026).
  • ETF and investor flows. J.P. Morgan names sustained Western ETF outflows during a Fed hiking cycle as the most significant bearish risk to its view.
  • Geopolitics and energy. The 2026 Middle East conflict lifted oil prices, inflation fears and yields, which cuts both ways for gold: safe-haven demand on one side, higher rates on the other.
  • Physical demand. Jewellery and bar buying in China and India responds to price levels and local festivals.

Track these on our economic calendar and the live gold chart. Context: Reuters reported that gold hit a record $5,595 an ounce in January 2026 before falling to around $4,000 by late October (27 Oct 2026).

Scenarios: bull, base and bear

Bull scenario

Growth slows, the Fed signals an end to hikes, real yields and the dollar fall and central banks keep buying at a high pace; ETF inflows return. The most bullish published forecasts below assume conditions of this kind.

Base scenario

Rates stay high for longer while central-bank buying continues. Prices consolidate, with any recovery coming mainly once markets begin to price rate cuts. Several banks describe a slower path along these lines.

Bear scenario

The Fed keeps hiking into a strong economy, real yields and the dollar climb further, ETF outflows accelerate and official buying slows. Goldman Sachs has described a hawkish case with a sharper correction (Reuters, 18 Sep 2026).

Scenarios describe conditions in words; they are not price targets. VoxTradePro does not publish its own price targets.

Reading the numbers

The published views span a wide range. The Reuters poll median for 2027 is well below the bank forecasts at the top of the range, and J.P. Morgan's table is dated June 2026, before the Fed's autumn hike, so it may since have been revised. The spread itself is the useful information: it shows how much depends on the path of interest rates and official buying. Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price forecast for 2027?

Published forecasts differ widely. As of the dates in the table, they include a Reuters poll median 2027 average of $4,650/oz, Goldman Sachs' $5,400/oz end-2027 forecast, UBS's $5,400/oz by September 2027 and J.P. Morgan's $6,263/oz 2027 average. None is a guarantee.

What is the biggest risk to gold?

Most published analysis points to higher real interest rates and a strong dollar, which reduce investor demand for a non-yielding asset, combined with any slowdown in central-bank buying.

Does VoxTradePro predict prices?

No. We explain what drives each market, describe clearly labelled scenarios and summarise forecasts that banks, agencies and analyst polls have published, with dates and links. We do not publish our own price targets.

How often is this page updated?

We review the forecasts table about once a month and whenever a major institution publishes a significant revision. The 'last reviewed' date at the top shows when it was last checked.
