Valuing silver
Silver value = weight in grams × (fineness ÷ 1,000) × (spot per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035) × exchange rate. Sterling cutlery, tea sets and jewellery are usually 925; older US coins are 900; much continental European silverware is 800 or 835. Weighted items such as candlesticks contain filler, so their silver content is lower than their total weight.
Like gold, silver sells above spot and is bought back below it. For silver the gap is proportionally larger because handling costs are high relative to the metal value. Live: $52.07 per troy ounce, $1.67 per gram.
Frequently asked questions
How do I value sterling silver?
Weigh it in grams, multiply by 0.925 to get the silver content and multiply by the per-gram spot price. The calculator does this for you.
Is silver-plated metal worth anything?
Very little as silver. Plating (often marked EPNS) is a thin layer over a base metal, so the silver content is tiny.
