Store of value: the argument on both sides
Supporters of Bitcoin call it "digital gold": scarce, portable and independent of any central bank. Gold's supporters point to its long record, its role in central-bank reserves and its tendency to hold up in crises. In practice the two have often moved differently. Bitcoin has tended to trade with risk assets and liquidity, while gold has been driven more by real interest rates and official buying. Some investors hold both for different reasons; others see them as competitors for the same "debasement hedge" role, a theme Bernstein highlighted in August 2026 when gold and Bitcoin ETFs were both back among the most-traded funds (The Block, 26 Aug 2026).
