Gold in Pakistan: local context

In Pakistan gold is bought and sold mainly by the tola (11.6638 grams) and by 10 grams, and it plays a large role in weddings and household savings. Daily local rates are announced by sarafa (bullion trader) associations in Karachi and other cities and are widely reported by the media. Jewellery is commonly made in 22K or 21K, while bars and biscuits are 24K.

The figures on this page are the international spot price converted at the official interbank exchange rate. They are a reference, not the local sarafa rate. Pakistan's local rate can sit above or below this converted value because of the open-market dollar rate, import rules, local supply and demand and dealer margins, so the gap changes from day to day. Comparing the two shows whether the local market is trading at a premium or a discount to world prices.

Because the rupee floats, gold in PKR is driven by two things at once: the US-dollar gold price and the dollar-rupee exchange rate. Periods of rupee weakness have historically pushed local gold prices up even when international gold was flat, which is one reason many families treat gold as a store of value. For jewellery, making charges and any applicable taxes are added on top.

How this price is calculated

Live: spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce × 276.6290 PKR per USD ÷ 31.1035 = PKR 36,217 per gram of pure gold. Each purity multiplies this by its gold content (for example 22K = 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67%), and each unit multiplies by its weight in grams.
