Buying gold in India: local context
India is one of the two largest gold-consuming countries, with demand concentrated in jewellery, weddings and festivals such as Diwali and Akshaya Tritiya. Prices are usually quoted per 10 grams, per gram for 22K jewellery and per tola, and domestic prices include customs import duty and Goods and Services Tax set by the government, so Indian retail rates sit above the converted international spot figure shown here. Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?
No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
