How to use the scrap gold calculator
- Weigh the item on accurate digital scales, in grams if possible. Remove stones, springs and non-gold parts, or subtract their weight.
- Find the hallmark: 999 or 24K, 916 or 22K, 875 or 21K, 750 or 18K, 585 or 14K, 417 or 10K, 375 or 9K. Plated or "filled" items (marked GP, HGE, RGP or GF) contain very little gold.
- Pick the karat and currency to see the melt value: the value of the pure gold the item contains at today's spot price.
- Optionally enter the percentage a buyer offers to see their price. Refiners, dealers and pawn shops pay below melt value to cover refining, assaying and their margin; the percentage varies widely, so get several quotes.
Formula
Value = weight in grams × (karat ÷ 24) × (spot price per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035) × exchange rate. One troy ounce is 31.1035 g, one tola 11.6638 g, one pennyweight 1.5552 g and one grain 0.0648 g.

What is melt value?
Melt value is the worth of the pure gold in an item at the current spot price, ignoring design, brand or gemstones. It is the baseline that scrap buyers work from.
How much do gold buyers pay compared with melt value?
Less than 100%. Buyers deduct refining and assay costs and their margin, and the share varies by buyer, item and quantity. Comparing several written quotes is the best way to judge an offer.
How do I know the karat of my gold?
Look for a hallmark stamp such as 375, 585, 750 or 916, or a karat mark like 9K, 14K, 18K or 22K. Unmarked items can be tested by a jeweller or with an XRF analyser.
