About this unit

The troy ounce is the benchmark unit of the global gold market: the London over-the-counter market, COMEX futures in New York and most news reports quote gold in US dollars per troy ounce. Popular bullion coins such as the American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, Britannia, Krugerrand and Australian Kangaroo each contain one troy ounce of fine gold, so this figure is also the metal value of a one-ounce coin.

One troy ounce equals 31.1035 grams, so a "1 oz" gold coin is not the same weight as an ounce of flour (28.35 g). Some coins, such as the 22K Krugerrand and American Eagle, weigh more than an ounce in total because the alloy adds copper to make them harder, but they still contain a full ounce of gold.

Conversion, live

Spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 × 31.1035 g = $4,072.10 per troy ounce of pure gold. For a karat, multiply by karat ÷ 24; for example 22K: $3,732.76.

All conversions used on this site

Gold and silver are traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce, which weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams (heavier than the 28.35 g ounce used for food). Every figure on this page starts from that live spot price and is converted with simple arithmetic:

  • Per gram = spot per ounce ÷ 31.1035
  • Per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (about 32.15 troy ounces)
  • Per tola = per gram × 11.6638 (one tola is 3/8 of a troy ounce)
  • Karat gold = pure-gold price × karat ÷ 24, so 22K is 91.67% gold, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%
  • Other currencies = US-dollar value × the latest daily exchange rate

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price per ounce today?

The live spot price per troy ounce is shown at the top of this page, in US dollars and in six other currencies. It is refreshed about every 15 minutes.

Is a troy ounce the same as a regular ounce?

No. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, while the regular (avoirdupois) ounce is 28.3495 grams. Precious metals are always priced in troy ounces.

How many troy ounces are in a kilogram?

About 32.1507 troy ounces are in one kilogram, so a 1 kg bar is worth roughly 32 times the per-ounce price.

Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?

No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
