About this unit

The kilobar is the workhorse of the wholesale and investment market in Asia and the Middle East. Swiss and Asian refiners cast large numbers of them for banks, vaults and exchanges such as the Shanghai Gold Exchange, and they are popular with larger private investors because the premium per gram is low. The bigger 400-ounce "London Good Delivery" bar, weighing around 12.4 kg, is what central banks and the London market hold.

The per-kilogram figure here is the per-gram price times 1,000, which equals about 32.15 troy ounces. A real kilobar is normally 999.9 fine, so its metal value is essentially the 24K figure.

Conversion, live

Spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 × 1,000 g = $130,921 per kilogram of pure gold. For a karat, multiply by karat ÷ 24; for example 22K: $120,011.

All conversions used on this site

Gold and silver are traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce, which weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams (heavier than the 28.35 g ounce used for food). Every figure on this page starts from that live spot price and is converted with simple arithmetic:

  • Per gram = spot per ounce ÷ 31.1035
  • Per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (about 32.15 troy ounces)
  • Per tola = per gram × 11.6638 (one tola is 3/8 of a troy ounce)
  • Karat gold = pure-gold price × karat ÷ 24, so 22K is 91.67% gold, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%
  • Other currencies = US-dollar value × the latest daily exchange rate

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 1 kg gold bar worth?

Its metal value is the spot price per troy ounce multiplied by 32.1507. The live figure is shown above; dealers add a small premium when selling and pay a little under spot when buying.

How many grams of gold are in a kilobar?

One kilogram is 1,000 grams. A standard kilobar is 999.9 fine, so it contains virtually 1,000 grams of pure gold.

Why do Asian markets use kilobars?

Kilobars are easy to handle, store and transport, and exchanges such as Shanghai and many Asian and Middle Eastern dealers trade in kilogram units, so the format became the regional standard.

Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?

No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
