Gold in Saudi Arabia: local context
Gold jewellery is a central part of weddings and family savings in Saudi Arabia, and jewellers in Riyadh, Jeddah and the other cities post a daily price per gram for each karat. 21K gold, which is 87.5% pure, is especially popular in Saudi Arabia and neighbouring markets because it combines a deep yellow colour with more durability than 22K or 24K. Bars and coins are typically 24K, and many South Asian buyers in the Kingdom also think in tolas, so this page includes the tola as well.
The Saudi riyal has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 riyals per dollar since 1986. As a result the riyal gold price is essentially the dollar spot price multiplied by 3.75: it moves with international gold, not with the exchange rate, which keeps the SAR price easy to check against global quotes.
Saudi Arabia applies Value Added Tax at 15%. Investment-grade gold, silver and platinum of at least 99% purity is zero-rated for VAT, while jewellery is taxed, so the price you pay for a necklace includes the metal, the workmanship and VAT. Confirm current treatment with the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) for your purchase.
How this price is calculated
Live: spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce × 3.7500 SAR per USD ÷ 31.1035 = SAR 490.95 per gram of pure gold. Each purity multiplies this by its gold content (for example 22K = 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67%), and each unit multiplies by its weight in grams. Figures are the value of the gold content only; local retail, jewellery and buy-back prices differ.
