How the silver price is calculated
Silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). Per gram = spot ÷ 31.1035; per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (32.15 oz); fine 999+ bullion = spot; sterling 925 = spot × 0.925; other currencies = USD value × the daily exchange rate.
What drives the silver price
Silver behaves partly like gold, reacting to interest rates, the dollar and safe-haven demand, and partly like an industrial metal. Solar panels, electronics, electric vehicles and power grids consume large amounts, while most mine supply comes as a by-product of lead, zinc, copper and gold mining, so output responds slowly to price. Frequently asked questions
Why is silver cheaper and more volatile than gold?
Silver is far more plentiful, and around half of demand is industrial (solar panels, electronics, electrical uses), so the price reacts to the economic cycle as well as to investment demand. Its market is also smaller and less liquid than gold's, which magnifies moves.
What is sterling silver worth compared with fine silver?
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver (hallmark 925), so its metal value is 0.925 times the pure-silver price. Tables on this page show both.
Do I pay VAT or sales tax on silver?
It depends on the country. Unlike investment gold, silver bullion is subject to standard-rate VAT in the UK and most EU countries, while Canada and Australia generally treat high-purity bullion as exempt from GST. Check local rules before buying.
How often does the price on this page update?
Our server collects the spot price about every 15 minutes, and the page refreshes it again in your browser while you read. Exchange rates are updated daily. Spot trading pauses from Friday evening to Sunday evening (New York time), so at weekends you see the last traded price.
