About this unit

The gram is the unit most people meet when they buy jewellery or small bars, from the souks of Dubai to high-street jewellers in London or Toronto. Spot gold is quoted per troy ounce, so the per-gram value is simply the ounce price divided by 31.1035. A one-gram bar is the smallest common investment size, and jewellers in many markets display a daily per-gram price for each karat.

Because jewellery is rarely pure, the karat matters as much as the weight: a 10-gram 18K chain contains 7.5 grams of gold. Use the karat table or our gold value calculator to work out the metal content of a piece.

Conversion, live

Spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce ÷ 31.1035 × 1 g = $130.92 per gram of pure gold. For a karat, multiply by karat ÷ 24; for example 22K: $120.01.

All conversions used on this site

Gold and silver are traded worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce, which weighs exactly 31.1034768 grams (heavier than the 28.35 g ounce used for food). Every figure on this page starts from that live spot price and is converted with simple arithmetic:

  • Per gram = spot per ounce ÷ 31.1035
  • Per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (about 32.15 troy ounces)
  • Per tola = per gram × 11.6638 (one tola is 3/8 of a troy ounce)
  • Karat gold = pure-gold price × karat ÷ 24, so 22K is 91.67% gold, 18K is 75% and 14K is 58.33%
  • Other currencies = US-dollar value × the latest daily exchange rate

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 gram of gold worth today?

One gram of pure (24K) gold is worth the spot price per troy ounce divided by 31.1035. The live figure is shown at the top of this page; jewellery and small bars sell for more because of premiums and taxes.

How do I work out the price of 22K gold per gram?

Multiply the 24K per-gram price by 22/24 (0.9167). For 18K multiply by 0.75 and for 14K by 0.5833. The table on this page does this automatically.

Why do small gold bars cost more per gram than large ones?

Minting, packaging and handling cost roughly the same whatever the size, so the premium over spot is a larger share of the price for 1 g or 5 g bars than for 100 g or 1 kg bars.

Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?

No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
