How to use moving averages

A moving average smooths price to show the trend. The SMA (simple) weights every day equally; the EMA (exponential) reacts faster to recent prices. Price above a rising 200-day average is the classic definition of a long-term uptrend. A golden cross is the 50-day crossing above the 200-day; a death cross is the reverse. Moving averages lag price and give false signals in sideways markets, so combine them with risk rules from our position sizing guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is a golden cross in crypto?

When the 50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average. It is widely watched as a sign of a long-term uptrend, but it lags price.

Why use perpetual futures candles?

Hyperliquid publishes free daily candles with browser access. Perp prices track spot closely, so the averages are very close to spot-based ones.
