Gold in Malaysia: local context

Malaysian jewellers and banks quote gold per gram, and the purity is usually given as a hallmark number rather than a karat: 999 (24K, often called emas 999), 916 (22K), 835 (about 20K) and 750 (18K). 916 is the everyday jewellery standard, and 999 is used for bars, wafers and investment products.

The national bullion coin is the Kijang Emas, issued by Bank Negara Malaysia in 1 oz, 1/2 oz and 1/4 oz sizes of 999.9 gold. Several Malaysian banks also offer gold investment accounts that let savers buy and sell gold by the gram at the bank's own buy and sell prices, which include a spread around the spot value shown here.

The ringgit floats, so gold in MYR reflects both the international dollar price and the USD/MYR exchange rate. When the ringgit strengthens, local gold can lag the dollar gold price, and when it weakens, local prices rise faster. Retail jewellery adds workmanship (upah) charges that vary by design and shop, so compare the per-gram metal value with the total price you are quoted. How this price is calculated

Live: spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce × 4.0458 MYR per USD ÷ 31.1035 = RM 529.68 per gram of pure gold. Each purity multiplies this by its gold content (for example 22K = 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67%), and each unit multiplies by its weight in grams.
