Gold in Hong Kong: local context

Hong Kong prices gold in its own traditional unit, the tael (兩). The tael used for gold weighs 37.429 grams, about 1.2034 troy ounces, and is divided into 10 mace (錢) of 3.7429 grams each. Goldsmiths and jewellery chains display their buying and selling prices per tael, and many also show a per-mace price for smaller items.

The city has one of the oldest gold markets in Asia: the Chinese Gold and Silver Exchange Society, founded in 1910, trades gold in taels, while the international over-the-counter market quotes in US dollars per troy ounce. Traditional jewellery is often sold as chuk kam (足金), meaning at least 99.0% gold, while investment products are usually 999.9.

Two features make the HKD price easy to follow. The Hong Kong dollar is held in a narrow band of 7.75 to 7.85 per US dollar under the Linked Exchange Rate System, so gold in HKD moves almost exactly with gold in US dollars. And Hong Kong has no sales tax, VAT or GST, so the main extras over the metal value are the dealer spread and, for jewellery, workmanship charges.

How this price is calculated

Live: spot $4,072.10 per troy ounce × 7.8428 HKD per USD ÷ 31.1035 = HK$1,026.78 per gram of pure gold. Each purity multiplies this by its gold content (for example 22K = 22 ÷ 24 = 91.67%), and each unit multiplies by its weight in grams. Figures are the value of the gold content only; local retail, jewellery and buy-back prices differ.

Frequently asked questions

How many grams are in a Hong Kong tael of gold?

A Hong Kong gold tael weighs 37.429 grams, about 1.2034 troy ounces. One tael equals 10 mace of 3.7429 grams each.

What does chuk kam mean?

Chuk kam (足金) is the Hong Kong term for gold that is at least 99.0% pure. Investment bars are usually even purer, at 999.9.

Is there tax on buying gold in Hong Kong?

Hong Kong does not levy VAT, GST or sales tax, so the retail price is the metal value plus the dealer spread and any workmanship charge.

Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?

No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
