Buying gold in Canada: local context
Canada is a major gold producer and home to the Royal Canadian Mint, maker of the 99.99% pure Gold Maple Leaf. Under Canadian tax rules, bullion that meets the purity thresholds for precious metals (at least 99.5% for gold and 99.9% for silver) is generally not subject to GST/HST, while jewellery and lower-purity items are taxed normally. Is this the price a jeweller will charge me?
No. This is the spot value of the metal itself. Jewellery and coins are sold with a premium over spot that covers manufacturing, design, dealer margin and, in many countries, sales tax or VAT. When you sell, buyers usually pay less than spot.
