What the ratio tells you

The ratio measures relative value, not direction. When it rises, gold is outperforming silver; when it falls, silver is outperforming. Some investors switch between the two when the ratio reaches levels they consider extreme, while others use it as a sentiment gauge: a rising ratio often accompanies economic worry, because silver's industrial demand suffers more in a slowdown.

J.P. Morgan noted that the ratio fell below 45 in late January 2026 and returned to around 70 by mid-2026, and that the modern average has been roughly 55-70, with an all-time high of 125.1 during the COVID-19 pandemic (J.P. Morgan, 13 Aug 2026). Read our full gold-to-silver ratio guide, and see the gold and silver price pages.

Frequently asked questions

What is a high gold/silver ratio?

There is no fixed threshold. J.P. Morgan describes the modern average as roughly 55-70; readings well above that mean silver is cheap relative to gold by historical standards, though the ratio can stay high for long periods.

Is silver a better investment than gold?

Neither is better in general. Silver is more volatile and more tied to industry; gold is steadier and more of a monetary asset. This page is not advice.
