About this unit

The troy ounce is the benchmark for silver just as for gold: COMEX futures, the London market and most bullion coins (American Eagle, Maple Leaf, Britannia, Philharmonic, Kangaroo) use it. A one-ounce silver coin contains 31.1035 grams of fine silver, so this figure is its metal value before the dealer premium, which is proportionally larger for silver than for gold.

Live: spot $52.07 per oz ÷ 31.1035 × 31.1035 g = $52.07.

How the silver price is calculated

Silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). Per gram = spot ÷ 31.1035; per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (32.15 oz); fine 999+ bullion = spot; sterling 925 = spot × 0.925; other currencies = USD value × the daily exchange rate.

Frequently asked questions

What is the silver price per ounce today?

The live spot price per troy ounce is shown above, refreshed about every 15 minutes.

Why do silver coins sell well above spot?

Minting, shipping and storage cost a similar amount per coin whatever the metal, but silver coins have a much lower metal value than gold, so those costs are a bigger percentage. VAT in some countries adds more.

Why is silver cheaper and more volatile than gold?

Silver is far more plentiful, and around half of demand is industrial (solar panels, electronics, electrical uses), so the price reacts to the economic cycle as well as to investment demand. Its market is also smaller and less liquid than gold's, which magnifies moves.
