How fees work
Bitcoin fees are paid per virtual byte (sat/vB) of transaction data. Blocks have limited space, so when many people want in, the price per byte rises. A simple transfer is about 140 vB; transactions with many inputs cost more. If you are not in a hurry, the economy rate can be a fraction of the next-block rate.
Ethereum fees are gas used × gas price. The price is a protocol base fee (burned) plus a tip to validators, quoted in gwei (a billionth of an ETH). A plain ETH transfer uses 21,000 gas; a token swap often uses around 150,000. Layer-2 networks are usually much cheaper. Your wallet may quote slightly different numbers because it uses its own estimate.

Frequently asked questions
What is a sat/vB?
Satoshis (0.00000001 BTC) per virtual byte of transaction size. Miners pick transactions paying the most per byte first.
What is gwei?
One billionth of an ether. Ethereum gas prices are quoted in gwei.
Why do fees change so fast?
Fees are an auction for limited block space and reset every block, roughly every 10 minutes on Bitcoin and every 12 seconds on Ethereum.
