Open interest vs volume

Open interest is the value of contracts that are still open; it shows how much leverage and hedging is sitting on an exchange. Volume counts every trade in 24 hours, including positions opened and closed within minutes. A high volume-to-open-interest ratio often means short-term trading and bots; a lower ratio suggests positions that are held longer.

Derivatives are leveraged and can wipe out a position quickly. Learn how liquidation works with our liquidation price calculator and practise without risk in the paper trading simulator.

Frequently asked questions

What is a perpetual swap?

A futures contract with no expiry date. A funding payment between longs and shorts keeps its price close to the spot price.

Is the biggest exchange the safest?

Not necessarily. Size shows liquidity, not safety. Check regulation in your country, proof of reserves and withdrawal history before using any exchange.
