Why dominance matters
Dominance compares Bitcoin with everything else. When fear rises, money often moves out of smaller coins and into Bitcoin (or stablecoins), and dominance climbs. In strong bull markets traders take more risk, altcoins can outrun Bitcoin and dominance falls. Keep in mind that the denominator keeps growing as new tokens launch, and that stablecoins count towards the total, so a slow long-term decline is partly structural.

Frequently asked questions
What is Bitcoin dominance?
Bitcoin's market capitalisation divided by the total market capitalisation of all cryptocurrencies, shown as a percentage.
Where does the history come from?
Since 7 November 2026 we record one value a day from CoinGecko's global market data. Earlier days come from the free public dominance CSV published by Bitcoin by the Numbers. Different data providers count slightly different coin lists, so values can differ by a few tenths of a percentage point.
Is high dominance bullish or bearish?
Neither on its own. Rising dominance in a falling market usually signals caution towards altcoins; rising dominance with a rising Bitcoin price often means Bitcoin is leading the move.
