Our method

We take the 100 largest coins by market cap, leave out Bitcoin itself and stablecoins, and subtract Bitcoin's percentage change from each coin's change over the same window. The altcoin season score is simply the share of those coins that did better than Bitcoin, scaled to 0–100. A score of 75 or more is commonly read as "altcoin season", 25 or less as "Bitcoin season".

Relative strength is useful context, not a forecast. A coin that beat Bitcoin last month can reverse quickly, and in a falling market "beating Bitcoin" can still mean losing money. Check the Bitcoin dominance chart to see the bigger trend.

Frequently asked questions

What is altcoin season?

A period when most large altcoins rise faster than Bitcoin. Many traders define it as at least 75% of the top coins beating Bitcoin over a set window.

Why are stablecoins excluded?

Stablecoins track the dollar, so comparing them with Bitcoin says nothing about altcoin strength.
