Silver is quoted in US dollars per troy ounce (31.1035 g). Per gram = spot ÷ 31.1035; per kilogram = per gram × 1,000 (32.15 oz); fine 999+ bullion = spot; sterling 925 = spot × 0.925; other currencies = USD value × the daily exchange rate.

Is this the price I will pay for silver coins?
No. This is the spot value of the metal. Coins and bars sell at a premium, and VAT or sales tax may apply depending on where you live.
Why is silver cheaper and more volatile than gold?
Silver is far more plentiful, and around half of demand is industrial (solar panels, electronics, electrical uses), so the price reacts to the economic cycle as well as to investment demand. Its market is also smaller and less liquid than gold's, which magnifies moves.
